Great Mosque of West Sumatra

If you look around the city of Padang, you will find that this mosque is the largest building in the city. The mosque is a tourist attraction for visitors to West Sumatra Province and an important element in the life of the surrounding community.

In 1833, a major earthquake hit the western coast of Sumatra, causing a tsunami that devastated much of Padang, but the residents are determined to "live with the sea" even after the devastation it caused, knowing that the area experiences a tsunami every 200 years.
