Marrakech, one of the four imperial cities and the pearl of the South, is the historic heart of Morocco and a city full of contrasts. It is a lush oasis at the edge of the Sahara and the Atlas Mountains. Its name, whose meaning remains enigmatic, has been used for centuries as the name of the whole country. Marrakech also received the colorful name of Al Bahja, the city which delights the heart.
The site of Marrakech is breathtakingly beautiful, with the Atlas mountains in the background of which are often seen the snowy peaks behind mist. In the sixteenth century, Louis de Marmol described Marrakech as "a beautiful city, best located in Africa, in a beautiful valley, surrounded by one of the richest landscapes."
