A travel advisory released by the US Department of State this Monday reveals the safest countries to travel to during the holiday season. Morocco was listed as safe.

The U.S. State Department released a travel advisory on Monday, November 21, indicating which countries are safe for travel during the upcoming holiday period.

No alert or warning was issued in regards to Morocco. The only other country in North Africa that was labelled as safe besides Morocco is Egypt.

In the rest of the African continent, the U.S. State department uses a red label to warn against visiting countries like Ethiopia, Tunisia, Chad and Nigeria altogether.

Meanwhile, the State Department is now alerting travelers about most European countries, which have traditionally been considered safer than most Middle Eastern and North African countries.

In the advisory, the State Department alerted “U.S. citizens to the heightened risk of terrorist attacks throughout Europe, particularly during the holiday season.”

Al Qaeda and ISIS continue to be, understandably, of concern to the State Department. “Credible information indicates the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS or Da’esh), al-Qa’ida, and their affiliates continue to plan terrorist attacks in Europe, with a focus on the upcoming holiday season and associated events,” the statement continued.

“U.S. citizens should exercise caution at holiday festivals, events, and outdoor markets.  This Travel Alert expires on February 20, 2017,” the statement added.

This isn’t the first time Morocco has ranked well in terms of safety for travel. Earlier this month, the Legatum Prosperity Index ranked Morocco as the safest country in North Africa.
