Greek island of Leros


Leros (Greek: Λέρο)) is a Greek island in the Dodecanese in the South Aegean Sea. It is located 317 kilometers (197 miles) (171 nautical miles) from the port of Athens Piraeus, which can be reached by ferry ride for 11 hours (or 45 minutes by flight from Athens). Leros is part of the regional unit of Kalimnos. The island is called Lèro in Italian and Turkish: İleriye.

Geographically
The island stretches about 74 square kilometers (29 square miles) and has a coastline of 71 kilometers (44 miles). The island includes many small uninhabited islands, including Levitha and Kinaros, which had a population of about 7,717 in 2011, although this number has swelled to more than 15,000 during the height of the summer. It is known that this island is famous for its medieval castle and the Knights of St. John may have been built on the Byzantine castle. The nearby islands are Patmos, Yepse, Kalimnos, and the small islands of Agia Kiriaki and Farmakos. In ancient times it was the island of Parthenos and Iokallis which was associated with Hellenistic and Roman literature on Meleager and Meleagrides. The administrative center is located in the largest city of Agia Marina, with a population of 2,672. Other large cities are Lakkíon.



Transportation
The island of Leros also has daily connections by river ferry boats to Piraeus and most of the Greek islands of Dodecanese such as Patmos, Ypsi, Samos, Kos, Rhodes, Simi and Neseros. There is a weekly connection as well as with some of the islands in the Cyclades such as Celerus and Amorgos, from Silos and visitors can visit some of the highland islands of Cyclades such as Mykonos, Tinos, Los, Paros, Naxos or Santorini. Leros has maintained its true traditional character and is in a position to offer the highest quality of tourism services to every visitor. There are modern hotel complexes, rental apartments with environment and local traditions of the yeros. This area is far from the bustling cities with a pace of life far from the large tourist areas.

You can move to Leros Island through the local Leros Airport in Partheni which connects the island with Athens. There is also a ferry that makes permanent trips to and from Piraeus and other islands of Dodecanese. There is an alternative method of transportation and travel for those who wish to visit Leros (8-10 hours) and that is to fly to Athens and then fly to Leros on an internal flight or fly directly to Kos and then to Leros by boat (1 - 2 hours).

The island of Leros is the small island of Dodecanese, which lies between Patmos and Kalimnos. Lai Island is located in Laki, 3 km south of Agia Marina and is an outlet for islands. It is built in the deep back, which is only 500 meters away in one of the largest and best natural ports in the Mediterranean Sea.

Leros is also famous for organized markets that sell everything. There are traditional old buildings in Agia Marina, Platano and Lucky and the three traditional markets of the island to sell fresh vegetables and fish and around them food shops, tourist shops, gold shops and shops. Most streets are covered on both sides with eucalyptus trees and pine making the driving experience a nice one.
The island has many attractions that are worth seeing and there are many bars to enjoy local cuisine and fresh fish. Leros is the perfect place for fish because many coastal villagers are involved in fishing. The island has some of the best fishing waters in the Aegean Sea.

Date of visit
August is the visit season for the island of Greek and Italian tourists, so those who wish to visit Leros this month is the appropriate month but you must make advance booking for accommodation and transport (trips and ferries).

Leros has many bars and nightclubs with foreign music, Greek and restaurants, even with live folk music and traditional local songs that the tourist enjoys until late at night until dawn and there is also cinema in Aki.
Leros unlike other Greek islands have nightlife throughout the year in winter and summer tours with locals and will go to restaurants, cafes, pubs and nightclubs like Athenians.
