The famous sprawling Azadi Square in the Iranian capital, Tehran
For 45 years, the square has witnessed celebrations, commemorations, military parades and mass demonstrations, most notably that led to the Iranian revolution on December 12, 1979.
The square was completed in 1971, and it is designed in the shape of an inverted “Y.” With the completion of construction work, the architect Hossein Amanat, who designed it, did not expect the square to become an icon, and enjoy such great popularity among Iranians today.
