The Greek island of Santorini (also known as Thira) is distinguished by its romantic sunsets, magnificent views of the Aegean Sea, and whitewashed buildings clinging to cliffs.
But this serene sight belies the explosive geological history of the island as it was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history. The Minoan eruption, some 3,600 years ago, caused the crater of Thera to collapse into the ocean, leaving Santorini a rough, crescent-shaped moon above the sea.
