Escalante has no business air terminal or highway, no gridlocks or stoplights. There is just a single street to this dusty station in southern Utah: Expressway 12, a long twisting lace of blacktop that crosses probably the most breathtaking desert in the country. From the town of Torrey, the restricted two-path course rises Rock Mountain, passing sewed aspen forests, tidy woods, and glades watched by elk, with irregular vistas of gorge spreading out to the skyline.

Yet, the most particular view on this 65-mile stretch is seen from the Hogsback, a blade of stone whose shoulders fall away from the street's edges. On all sides extends the northern tip of Stupendous Flight of stairs Escalante Public Landmark, an apparently perpetual area of immaculate sandstone steps, buttes, and ravines safeguarded by their roughness for millennia. To pilgrims, this scene set apart by breaks, precipices, and hoodoos represented a conundrum so impressive that it was one of the last places in the mainland US to be planned.

Today, the landmark's almost 1.9 million sections of land of an area has been diagrammed yet at the same time remains generally unfrequented. Because of its distant area, it is in many cases ignored for its eminent and all the more effectively arrived at neighbors, Legislative hall Reef Public Park toward the north and Bryce Gorge and Zion Public Parks toward the west. Without the crowds of sunbaked guests, the safeguard and the town of Escalante, which lies nearly inside the landmark's limits, feel refreshingly wild. There are not many places more tranquil to consider the powers that framed southern Utah's church buildings of rock.
