In Arabic language dictionaries, Doha means a forked tree with extended branches.
Historically, the site of Doha was once called Al Bidda, before it was given its current name during the nineteenth century. It is believed that the name "Doha" came from the fact that it was built on one of the "dohas", which are the round bays. Historical sources suggest that the city took this name after a battle took place in the same place called the "killed Doha" battle.
