The story of La Pascoleta
La Pascoleta's face is surprisingly expressive, complete with thick eyelashes and a glassy gaze, her hands have weary details and her legs have varicose veins.
It has aroused astonishment and attention since La Pascoleta first appeared in the window of a wedding dress shop in Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1930. It is believed that there is a strong resemblance between the famous Mexican doll and the daughter of the shop owner, Pascuala Esparza.
According to a local legend, the store owner's daughter was preparing to get married and was bitten by a black widow spider on her wedding day and died. Not long after her death, a doll wearing a wedding dress appeared in the store window, giving birth to a legend that what people see in the store is not a doll but the corpse of the bride. Mummified.
Over the years, customers have claimed that La Pascoletta's eyes follow them as they walk around the store, or that they turn around to suddenly find her in a different position. "Every time I walk near La Pascoletta I feel like I'm sweating profusely," one said. "I think she's a real person."
Another local legend claims that "La Pascolita" was actually just a doll but was made like that by a visiting French magician who visited her window every night to bring her to life, take her, dance with her, and bring her back to the shop every morning.
God knows what the truth is, but it remains a mysterious phenomenon.
