The Man Who Sold a Snowball for a Dollar
A working brain and knows how to sell the product!!!
It's no joke. David Hammons was actually selling snowballs on Sunday, February 13, 1983, in Cooper Square, New York.
He held what would later be called the "Bliz-aard Ball Sale" among other anonymous street vendors. The concept was simple: display carefully arranged snowballs, sorted by size, on a mat for $1 each. His photographer friend Daoud Bey accompanied him throughout the day and captured the moment.
The versatile artist was born in 1943 in Springfield, and often drew inspiration from his African-American roots and community. This work, among other things, contributed to the fame he had avoided throughout his life, preferring to remain in the shadows.
This street performance, which was intended to reflect the demise of the art world, was the subject of a comprehensive study by Elena Filipovic, published in a book titled David Hammons: Bliz-aard Ball Sale.
During a conversation between the writer and the artist, Hammons said, "You don't have to write your book. There's no reason to write the book."
