The longest fast in history: How did a man survive for more than a year without food?

In 1965, a 27-year-old obese Irishman named Angus Barbery decided to do the unbelievable… stop eating for a full 382 days!

Yes, for more than a year he lived only on his own body fat, water, some liquids and nutritional supplements. During this period, he only went to the bathroom once every 40-50 days!

What started as a short fast, prescribed by Dr. William Kinnear Stewart for 40 days, turned into an unprecedented journey. Angus, who everyone expected would collapse at any moment, found the exact opposite! He was calm, his body adapted to the absence of food, and his desire to achieve the goal was stronger than any hunger.

After more than a year of this legendary fast, on the morning of July 11, 1966, Angus broke his fast in a modest but unforgettable way: a boiled egg, a slice of buttered bread, and a cup of coffee. In a later interview, he said that he enjoyed every bite, but surprisingly, he felt full immediately!

Angus started at 207 kg, and when he finished the fast, he had lost 125 kg, reaching his ideal weight of 82 kg. What is even more amazing is that he did not regain the lost weight! Even after 5 years of fasting, tests showed that he remained under 90 kg for the rest of his life.

Angus’ story is not just about fasting, it is a testament to the power of human will when a person decides to change his destiny himself!
