The Hinterkaifeck Farm Murder is one of the most mysterious crimes in German history.
In 1922, a horrific massacre took place on a remote farm called Hinterkaifeck, near the town of Grüben in Bavaria, Germany.
A family of six lived on the farm:
– Andreas Gruber (63 years old) and his wife Casilia (72 years old),
– their widowed daughter Viktoria Gabriele (35 years old),
– their two children: little Casilia (7 years old) and Josef (2 years old),
– and a new young maid named Maria Baumgartner.
– Days before the crime, Andreas Gruber noticed strange things:
– Footprints in the snow, heading towards the house but not returning.
– Footsteps coming from the attic at night.
– A strange newspaper that did not belong to the family was found in the house.
On the night of March 31, 1922, four family members were lured one by one into the barn where they were murdered with a pickaxe (a small, sharp-headed axe). The killer then returned to the house and killed the young child, Joseph, and the maid, Maria!
The strangest thing of all: When the bodies were discovered several days later, it was found that the animals had been fed and cared for, and even the milk had been milked! This means that the killer had remained on the farm for days after the crime.
The case remained unsolved, becoming one of the most mysterious and terrifying crimes in European history.
