The Legend of the Pedro Mountain Mummy: What You Didn’t Know
In 1932, while prospectors Cecil Main and Frank Carr were searching for gold, they blasted a cave in the Pedro Mountains near Wyoming.
Inside the cave, they found a strange, 6.5-inch-tall mummy, later nicknamed Pedro the Mummy.
X-ray examinations revealed a complete skeleton with sharp teeth, a spine, and ribs, confirming it was a real person and not a doll. Scientists were divided between considering it a human infant with rare deformities and an unknown species, especially given its unusual bone density.
The Shoshone people linked the discovery to the Nimerigar legend, referring to the "little people" who were warriors in their folklore.
The mystery deepened after the discovery of signs of violent injuries and fleshy remains in the stomach, suggesting a bloody, unnatural death. The mummy passed between collectors until it finally disappeared in 1950 with its owner, Ivan Goodman.
Today, only old photographs and X-rays remain, leaving Pedro a mystery suspended between science and legend.
