Elon Musk revealed a live stream of his Starlink service, filmed in Antarctica.
A video posted on X and promoted by Elon Musk, claiming to be a live stream from Antarctica using Starlink, has been corrected based on user feedback. The footage was actually recorded in Patagonia, South America. This correction came after the video went viral following Musk's public endorsement of the claim while promoting SpaceX's satellite internet service.
A portion of the live stream, complete with audio, appears at the end of the video.
How did the Antarctica claim spread?
The controversy began when an X user shared an advertisement during the Super Bowl for Starlink, SpaceX's satellite internet service, highlighting its ability to provide connectivity in remote areas. Musk responded by asserting that Starlink offers fast, low-latency internet "virtually anywhere on Earth."
Shortly after, another user posted a video showing a majestic, cathedral-like ice cave, claiming it was a live stream from Antarctica thanks to Starlink. Musk confirmed the claim, stating that the footage was indeed streamed live from Antarctica using the Starlink network.
Given Starlink's reputation for connecting remote locations, the claim quickly spread across the platform.
However, while such connectivity is technically possible even near Antarctica, no independent evidence has been presented to confirm that this particular video was streamed from the continent using Starlink. In this case, the uploader's own statement was the clearest indication of the actual location.
Why would they want to conceal the fact that this live stream originated in Antarctica?
