BTK: The Family Man Who Murdered for 30 Years
The story of the serial killer known as BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill) is one of the most terrifying cases in American crime history , not just because of his crimes, but because of his shocking double life!
Who was BTK?
Real name: Dennis Rader
On the surface, he was an ordinary man: a city employee, a devoted husband and father, and even an active member of his church!
But behind this facade, he lived a completely different life!
He began his crimes in the 1970s in Wichita, Kansas.
He chose the nickname BTK because he enjoyed controlling his victims (tying them up, torturing them, and then killing them).
Strangely, he wasn't content with just the crimes; he would contact the police and the media with letters containing horrifying details of his crimes, as if he were seeking notoriety and recognition!
After a long period of silence, he resurfaced in 2004, and that was the beginning of the end.
He murdered 10 people between 1974 and 1991, including entire families and children.
One of the strange things about him was that he documented his crimes for himself. He kept photos and writings related to his actions, and sometimes wrote letters or "diaries" about what he did.
* He had an obsession with control.
* He loved manipulating the police and the media.
* He lived a perfect double life: a "perfect man" in public, and a serial killer in secret.
* He was a narcissist and sought attention in any way possible.
He was arrested in 2005 after the police were able to track him down using a simple piece of technical evidence in one of his letters—a small mistake that ended his entire career.
He was sentenced to 10 life sentences (one for each victim), with no possibility of parole. A Netflix documentary about his story, "My Father the BTK Killer," was recently made, in which his daughter shares her testimony.
