Monkey Civil War | The largest chimpanzee civil war ever recorded - brutal fighting
Scientists have declared a bloody "civil war" in the forests of Uganda between two chimpanzee factions, the first such incident in over 50 years!
The two warring groups were once a single community living in harmony and brotherhood for more than 20 years, but for some reason, they split into two factions (eastern and western).
Three years after the split, a brutal war erupted, claiming the lives of adult males and females. Even infants were not spared; they were hunted down.
The number of infants killed so far has reached 17.
This vicious war continues to this day, and it is the first scientifically documented "civil war" in the chimpanzee community since the Gombe War in the 1970s.
The attacks are brutal. In the central region, western chimpanzees have snatched infants from their mothers' breasts and beaten them to death. One researcher said that chimpanzees resort to collective violence when attacking adult males or adolescents. Another researcher added, "Civil war is a troubling prospect for humans. How can one turn on their neighbor? I think studying chimpanzees sheds light on many aspects of human warfare, allowing us to understand how group identities can shift and how deadly aggression can arise."
