Can you believe that a baby giraffe begins its life by falling from a height of more than 1.5 meters?
The female giraffe gives birth standing up, so her calf falls to the ground from a height of approximately 1.5 to 2 meters immediately after birth. It's a seemingly harsh scene, but it's perfectly natural.
This sudden fall helps the calf quickly transition from the womb environment to breathing and moving, and it stimulates its body and vital systems to begin functioning immediately. Surprisingly, the giraffe calf doesn't remain helpless for long; within about 30 to 60 minutes, most calves can stand and walk on their own.
The mother then encourages her calf to get up, and may push or touch it with her foot if it hesitates, because staying still makes it an easier target for predators.
This speed is crucial in the wild, where young giraffes may face the dangers of lions and hyenas. Every minute can mean the difference between life and death. From the moment it falls to the ground until it stands beside its mother, a baby giraffe experiences one of the fastest and most extraordinary beginnings of life in the animal kingdom.
