The story began in Madagascar in 2004, when British designer Simon Beers and designer Nicholas Godley decided to pursue a crazy idea: creating a cloak from golden spider silk. The problem was that these spiders couldn't be farmed because they eat each other. The solution was rudimentary: every morning, 80 workers went out into the fields to collect thousands of wild spiders. They placed them on special machines to extract their natural golden silk for hours, then released them again.
After eight years of daily work and collecting 1.2 million spiders, they obtained only 3 kilograms of pure silk. The golden color you see isn't dye; it's the natural color of the silk, which is five times stronger than steel and lighter than cotton. Today, the cloak is on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and is considered the only piece of its kind in the world.
