This isn't the opening of a horror movie. It's part of one of Malaysia's most infamous murder cases of the 1990s… the case of Mona Fandey.

According to accounts surrounding the case, one of Mona Fandey's clients was Mazlan Idris, a politician and member of the Pahang State Legislative Assembly.
Reports suggested that he hoped to advance his political career and believed Mona and her husband could help him through alleged spiritual rituals and supernatural practices.
Mona, her husband Mohamad Nor Affandi, and their assistant Juraimi Hassan reportedly gave him a cane and a hat, claiming that the objects had once belonged to former Indonesian president Sukarno.
They allegedly told him the items possessed special powers that could help him achieve his ambitions.
In return, he was asked to pay a substantial amount of money for their services.
But behind those mysterious promises, a tragic ending was waiting.
Mazlan Idris: The Political Ambition That Ended in Disaster
In July 1993, Mazlan Idris disappeared under circumstances that raised serious questions.
Investigators later focused on the money he had withdrawn before vanishing, as well as the people who had been in contact with him.
According to accounts of the case, Mazlan had gone to Mona Fandey's home to take part in an alleged ritual. He was reportedly instructed to lie down and close his eyes.
But what happened next was nothing like the spiritual ceremony he had supposedly expected.
Mazlan was murdered. His body was dismembered into 18 pieces, and his remains were buried beneath a concrete floor in a building connected to the case.
It was a horrifying crime. But the biggest revelation was still to come.
How Was the Crime Exposed?
After Mazlan disappeared, investigators began searching for answers.
Then came a crucial breakthrough.
Juraimi Hassan, the couple's assistant, led police to the location where the victim's remains had been buried.
There, authorities discovered the body parts beneath the concrete, turning the investigation into one of the most widely discussed criminal cases in Malaysian history.
After gathering evidence and hearing witness testimony, authorities charged Mona Fandey, her husband Mohamad Nor Affandi, and their assistant Juraimi Hassan.
During the trial, disturbing details about the murder emerged. Mona's behavior in front of journalists and photographers also attracted considerable attention.
She was sometimes seen smiling and wearing striking outfits, creating a startling contrast with the seriousness of the accusations against her.
But behind those photographs circulating in the newspapers was a real murder trial… and a victim whose life had been brutally taken.
The Verdict That Sealed Their Fate
On February 9, 1995, the court found Mona Fandey, her husband, and their assistant guilty of murdering Mazlan Idris.
All three were sentenced to death by hanging.
The case did not end there. Appeals and legal challenges continued over the following years, but they failed to change the final outcome.
On November 2, 2001, the three were executed at Kajang Prison in Malaysia.
And so, a case that began with mysterious promises and political ambitions ended in murder, a courtroom trial, and the death penalty.
Did Mona Fandey's Legend Survive?
Even after the case was closed, mysterious stories associated with Mona Fandey continued to circulate.
Some people shared accounts of supposedly strange events at places connected to her, including claims of unusual sounds and unexplained occurrences.
However, these remain stories and allegations that have not been reliably established. They should not be confused with the facts proven in court.
What we do know is that Mona Fandey, her husband, and their assistant were convicted of murdering Mazlan Idris, and their sentences were carried out in 2001.
The supernatural stories that followed helped transform the case into a frightening legend passed down through the years.
