The 20-Hour Video Diary That Exposed Björk’s Stalker
Ricardo López, who later became known as “Björk’s stalker,” was an American man of Uruguayan descent, born on January 14, 1975. His family eventually settled in the United States, where they lived in Georgia. López was described as a socially isolated young man who struggled with low self-esteem. He worked as a pest-control technician and spent much of his free time alone.
In 1993, López developed a strong fascination with Icelandic singer Björk. What initially appeared to be ordinary admiration gradually became an unhealthy obsession. He began collecting information about her and writing letters to her, becoming increasingly preoccupied with her personal life.
His obsession intensified after he learned that Björk was in a relationship with British musician Goldie. López became increasingly angry and emotionally disturbed by the relationship, eventually deciding to take dangerous action against the singer.
López planned to send Björk a package designed to seriously harm her. He also began documenting his thoughts and plans through a series of personal video recordings. In total, he recorded more than 20 hours of footage, creating a disturbing diary that later became important to investigators.
On September 12, 1996, López sent the package to Björk’s home in London before returning to his apartment in Florida. He then made a final recording in which he died by suicide.
Four days later, authorities discovered his body. Investigators examined his recordings and other evidence, which helped them identify and intercept the package before it could reach Björk. The dangerous package was safely neutralized, and Björk was not physically harmed.
The case later attracted widespread attention and became the subject of documentaries, including “The Video Diary of Ricardo López.” The documentary featured portions of López’s personal recordings and explored the disturbing progression from celebrity admiration to dangerous obsession.
The story of Ricardo López remains a chilling example of how an unhealthy fixation on a public figure can escalate when obsessive behavior is left unchecked. It also highlights the importance of recognizing stalking and threatening behavior before it develops into a serious danger.
