United Nations Votes to Abolish Mercator Projection: A Shift Towards Accurate Earth Representation
The United Nations voted overwhelmingly to abolish the Mercator projection and switch to a more accurate representation of the Earth's shape (the Equal Earth projection).
164 votes in favor, 1 vote against (the United States), 6 abstentions.
The Mercator projection distorts the Earth's shape, making Europe, Russia, Canada, and the United States appear much larger than they actually are, while Africa appears smaller than its true size.
For example, Greenland appears the size of Africa, when in reality Africa is 14 times larger.
The resolution is not legally binding, but many countries, schools, international organizations, and technology companies will adopt it to show the true size of the Earth. This will be incorporated into education, public presentations, and media to prevent people from developing a misconception about the size of the continents.
The campaign was initiated by a small West African country (Togo) and ultimately succeeded in securing this resolution.
