Arados and Arad in Phoenician means refuge, and it is a small island on the Syrian coast opposite the city of Tartus.
Arwad is an ancient island that was a prosperous Phoenician kingdom that controlled areas of the northern coast of Syria. The name Arwad or Arados was mentioned in the Amarna letters, in the annals of the kings of Assyria, and in the discoveries of the Phoenician civilization on the Mediterranean.
