Has Elon Musk stated that he will step down as CEO of Twitter?
Elon Musk, the owner and CEO of Twitter, made the announcement on December 20, 2022, saying that he would resign as CEO once he found someone "foolish enough to take the job." After tweeting a poll on December 18 in which he asked Twitter users if they wanted him to step down, he made this announcement, saying that he would "abide by the results of this poll." Some 57.5% of individuals who casted a ballot mentioned he step down.
Musk made the announcement after he laid off most of the company's employees and faced a lot of criticism for suspending a few journalists from the platform (they were soon reinstated). Tesla stock plummeted at the same time, and critics argued that Musk's Twitter drama was a significant distraction from his other responsibilities as Tesla's CEO. There was a lot of speculation that Musk was making the announcements to appease Tesla shareholders.
Musk did not specify a timetable for his replacement, nor was it clear that he would fulfill the promise. CNBC, however, was informed by unidentified sources that he had already been actively seeking a replacement prior to the Twitter poll.
Since Musk would still have direct control over the business, it was also unclear whether Musk would actually cede power to a new CEO. The Verge noted that the majority of Twitter is made up of "software & servers," which Musk stated he would concentrate on when he was no longer CEO.
Although Musk stated that he would be leaving his position as CEO, no specifics regarding when, how much control he would relinquish, or who would take his place were provided.
To summarize, much was still unclear at the time of this reporting, despite the fact that we rate his announcement as "Correct Attribution" and that he actually said it.
