With WiFi.. you can see beyond the walls!
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have come up with a machine learning-powered way to map and see through walls for people by analyzing the WiFi signals in use and processing them with computer algorithms.
In their paper, the team explains that it is possible to accurately estimate the 3D shapes and movements of human bodies in a room by using WiFi signals sent and received by routers.
To do this, the researchers used DensePose, a system for mapping pixels on the surface of the human body, which was developed by London-based researchers and AI researchers at Facebook.
The researchers added that the WiFi used could be a more widespread and affordable way to track the exact locations of people than traditional camera and LIDAR or RGB systems.
See through walls with WiFi
According to Futurism, most households in developed countries have WiFi, and this technology could be expanded to monitor the elderly or suspicious behaviors at home.
This isn't the first time scientists have tried to "see through walls" using WiFi signals. In 2018, researchers from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory came up with a way to analyze radio signals that bounce off people's bodies to determine their location in the form of animated characters.
It remains to be seen if technology will come in the future at the expense of anyone's privacy, especially in light of the presence of smart home devices
