As CNN reports; Most destructive fire in LA history- The Palisades Fire that is scorching the seaside area between Malibu and Santa Monica exploded to more than 15,800 acres Wednesday with zero containment. California wildfires , displaced thousands, and destroyed homes, sparking a political clash. President-elect Trump blamed Governor Newsom for mismanagement, citing dry hydrants and environmental policies, while Newsom called for unity and invited Trump to witness the devastation. High winds continue to fuel the crisis.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) faces immense challenges as devastating wildfires tear through the county, highlighting the impact of recent $17.6 million budget cuts. LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley warned in a December memo that the reductions, including $7 million in overtime funding, have severely weakened the department's ability to respond to large-scale emergencies like wildfires, earthquakes, and hazardous incidents. These cuts have also jeopardized FAA-mandated pilot training and aerial firefighting capabilities.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, under scrutiny for the cuts, have denied they impacted the wildfire response. However, criticism intensified as Bass was in Ghana during the crisis. The Palisades Fire, one of the most destructive in LA’s history, remains 0% contained, with at least 10 fatalities and thousands of homes threatened. Chief Crowley has urged for restored funding to ensure firefighter safety and operational readiness as LA grapples with these cascading impacts.
Heartbreaking is the only fitting word to describe this So many beautiful homes and memories
