The YouTube Dad Who Helps Millions Of People
His father abandoned him at the age of fourteen, leaving him and his seven siblings after a bitter divorce. His older brother, then twenty-three, took him in and did everything he could to raise him.
Rob Kinney grew up without anyone to teach him the skills most people learn from their fathers: how to tie a tie, change a tire, fix a leaking toilet, shave, and iron shirts. He had to discover all of this on his own, little by little, over the course of decades.
In April 2020, he created a YouTube channel called "Dad, How Do I?" with a simple idea: to provide short videos teaching basic life skills to those who didn't have a father figure to guide them. He expected only 30 or 40 subscribers, and his first video was about how to tie a tie. Within a few weeks, his videos went viral across Reddit, TikTok, and Facebook, providing millions who grew up without a father, or with an absent one, with exactly what they were missing.
The channel now boasts over 5.5 million subscribers and tens of millions of views. The comments section overflows with people calling him "the father of the internet," expressing feelings and words they never dared to say to their own fathers.
He expected only 40 followers... and became a father figure to 5.5 million people.
