The Cinema of the End of the World... A Fantasy Turned into Horror in Sinai
In April 2014, while searching on Google Maps, Estonian photographer Kapu Kikkas stumbled upon a strange image in the middle of the Sinai desert. Upon zooming in, he discovered it was an abandoned cinema in the desert.
This prompted him to travel to Egypt, photograph it, and learn its story. Locals called it "The Cinema of the End of the World."
The cinema could only be reached via a single road called the Dusty Road. It was located in Wadi Al-Aat (6 kilometers from Wadi Al-Kharoum) near Sharm El Sheikh.
It was built in 2001 by a wealthy Frenchman named Dion Adèle in the style of the 1950s. He wanted to offer a unique experience by showing films in a magical, open-air setting amidst the mountains. He installed 700 beautifully designed wooden chairs and prepared everything for the premiere, which was to feature the famous science fiction film "Space Saga." However, a technical malfunction in the generator prevented the screening. The show is over.
The cinema remained forgotten until its rediscovery.
Today, only 150 seats remain.
