The first AI program in history - ELIZA

It has returned after 60 years to appear again

It is the first artificial intelligence program in history

But did you know that!!!

Researchers and scientists have revived or repaired "ELIZA", the world's first chatbot using the original code found in the archives of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after nearly 60 years Imagine!! ELIZA, developed by Professor Joseph Weizenbaum, was one of the early AI programs designed to mimic a therapist and respond to users with simple prompts and questions.

It was long thought to be lost or corrupted, but the original code for the chatbot, written in the ancient MAD-SLIP programming language, was rediscovered in 2021 by researchers at MIT and Stanford.

After painstakingly making corrections and creating an emulator to mimic 1960s computers, the team successfully ran ELIZA on December 21, its first run in nearly 60 years. In addition to being a technological milestone, ELIZA’s revival underscores the importance of preserving the history of AI. This chatbot laid the foundation for today’s conversational AI, influencing everything from Siri to ChatGPT.

Researchers hope the project will inspire future generations to learn about and archive early digital innovations as part of our cultural heritage of bygone technology. With the return of ELIZA, the world is getting a rare glimpse into the origins of ancient AI and the vision of one of its early pioneers.
