The Most Terrifying Museum In The World

The museum you see in the photos, dubbed "the most terrifying museum in the world," is located in Guanajuato, Mexico. It displays the mummies of cholera victims.

The museum houses the mummified remains of over 100 people, making it quite frightening for visitors, especially given the horrific features the bodies retain even in death, as if they were still suffering from the debilitating disease.

The museum's continued existence reflects the suffering of the city's inhabitants during the cholera epidemic of the 1830s.

Countless cholera victims were buried in mass graves, some in above-ground vaults, to prevent the disease from spreading.

As the death toll grew and burial space dwindled, the government resorted to a drastic measure: an unusual tax. The Mexican government imposed an unjust tax on the population in 1865, with a harsh punishment: anyone unable to pay the tax for three consecutive years was forced to exhume the bodies of their loved ones.

The museum houses some truly gruesome mummies, including that of a pregnant woman, as well as the preserved body of a child, which the museum's official website describes as the smallest mummy in the world.
