Moroccan Seeds Preserved in Norway's "Doomsday Vault"
Norway's "Doomsday Vault" Hosts Moroccan Seeds to Protect Agricultural Diversity
In the latest deposit at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway, known as the "Doomsday Vault" seeds from Moroccan plants were deposited in this fortified facility deep within an Arctic mountain. The vault is designed to protect global food diversity from wars, natural disasters, and climate change.
The vault currently houses more than 1.4 million samples of agricultural crop seeds deposited by over 80 countries. The International Center for Agricultural Research in Rabat (CIHRA) is one of the leading institutions contributing to this project, reflecting Morocco's growing role in global food security and the protection of plant genetic resources in arid regions.
